About The Artist

Jon Vance began creating his artwork on January 1, 2010. A week earlier, on Christmas day, he watched his niece create a photographic relief sculpture. Using his own technique, he made a 3D photo of a covered bridge as a gift for his parents. Since then, Jon has created more than 700 photos. Some of his artwork is showcased in the gift shops at the Indiana State Museum and Indiana Historical Society. In January of 2011, he juried into the Indiana Artisan program, which recognizes local creators of high-quality arts and crafts. Many of Jon’s family members are also very artistic. His wife, Cheryl, and children, Lianne and Justin, all create various forms of artwork, including bas relief using plaster. His brothers make wood carvings and oil paintings. Jon grew up in a strong Christian family on a farm in southwestern Ohio. He and two of his brothers are in ministry. Jon serves as the Small Group Minister at Hazel Dell Christian Church in Carmel, Indiana.

The Process

Simply stated, Jon calls his artwork “3D Photography.” It is a form of bas (low) relief, which is sculpture carved from a flat surface that creates a three-dimensional appearance on a two-dimensional plane. The 3D look starts with five to seven copies of a single photograph. The base layer stays intact. Then, beginning with the first layer, everything that is farthest away is cut from the picture. With each layer, more and more is cut away until the final layer has only what is closest in the foreground. The layers are then assembled, stacked on top of each other using small spacers. This creates the dimensional appearance.
